Temple and Castle: Perfect Day

We had the great opportunity to go the the Copenhagen Temple this morning. It is very small but beautifulinside. Apparently it was one of the oldest LDS churches in Scandanavia until it was refurbished in 2004 and dedicated as the Copenhagen, Denmark temple.

After the temple we drove about 30 miuntes to the Frederiksborg Castle. Frederiksborg Castle is located in the middle of Hillerød on three islands in the castle lake. The oldest parts of the castle were built in 1560 by King Frederik II and the castle is named after him.The majority of the present castle was built between 1600-1620 by Frederik II's son, Christian IV in Dutch Renaissance style with sweeping gables, sandstone decorations and copper-covered roofs and spires. The castle burnt in 1859 but was rebuilt from 1860-84 with financial support from brewer J. C. Jacobsen and later by the Carlsberg Foundation.

Our purpose was to see the Karl Bloch paintings in the chapel. We had no idea how cool this place would be. It is surrounded by beautifiul gardens: A large tailored Baroque garden and then acres of natural gardens.

Here is a movie I made of a bunch of pictures I merged together of the castle and the baroque garden

We had lunch in a charming outdoor restaurant on the castle grounds. The castle was very impressive and full of art. I especially loved the ornate ceilings. We spent the whole day there. There was a wedding in the chapel so we had to wait until the very end to get in. It was worth the wait. The paintings were in a small alcove in the back of this huge ornate chapel. There were some I had never seen before (probably because the church didn't use them cause the angels had wings) but anyway they were exceptional.

When we bought some postcard prints fromthe cashier he asked if we were fom Utah but he pronounced it "Ootay" We laughed and said no but we were Mormon and not all Mormons are from Utah.

This was Tom's favorite. My favorite was behind an altarpiece (and we were'nt supposed to take flash pictures)
